Spring Cleaning: How to Declutter & Refresh Your Wardrobe for the New Season
Spring is here! The days are getting longer, the air feels lighter, and it’s time to swap thick winter layers for fresh, breezy outfits.
But before you start shoving heavy jumpers to the back of your wardrobe, let’s pause for a moment—because seasonal wardrobe changes aren’t just about switching clothes.
This is the perfect opportunity to declutter, refresh, and reset your wardrobe so that getting dressed each day feels effortless (instead of overwhelming).
Why Does Wardrobe Clutter Build Up So Quickly?
Ever wondered why your wardrobe always feels full, yet you never have anything to wear? Here’s why:
You’re holding onto clothes that no longer fit or suit your lifestyle.
Seasonal pieces are mixed in, making it hard to find what you actually need.
You’re keeping items “just in case” but never actually wear them.
The result? A cluttered, stressful wardrobe that makes getting dressed feel like a chore. But with a simple, step-by-step system, you can create a functional, organised wardrobe that works for you all year round.
Step 1: The Ultimate Wardrobe Decluttering Process
The key to a clutter-free wardrobe is being intentional—keeping only what you truly love and wear.
Pro Tip: Don’t just move things around—take everything out first! Seeing your wardrobe empty helps you make better decisions. Seeing how much you have in one pile also makes you ask the question “Do I need all of this?”
Sort Your Clothes into Four Categories:
Keep – Clothes you love, wear often, and feel great in.
Donate – Good-quality items that no longer suit you.
Store – Seasonal clothes (coats, boots) you won’t need for months.
Toss – Anything damaged, stained, or worn out beyond repair.
Use the 3-Second Rule:
Hold up each item and ask, “Would I wear this tomorrow?” If you hesitate for more than 3 seconds, it’s probably time to let it go!
Be Honest About ‘Just in Case’ Items:
If you haven’t worn it in over a year, chances are, you won’t. Give yourself permission to move on!
Now that you’ve decluttered, it’s time to store winter items properly so they stay fresh for next season.
Step 2: Storing Winter Clothes the Right Way
Best Storage Tips for Winter Clothes:
Fold Heavy Jumpers – Hanging them can cause stretching.
Use Vacuum-Sealed Bags – Ideal for bulky coats and knitwear.
Store Shoes with Silica Packets – Helps absorb moisture and prevent mould.
Label Storage Bins – So you can easily find what you need next winter!
Step 3: Organising Your Spring/Summer Wardrobe
With winter pieces packed away, let’s set up your spring/summer wardrobe for effortless daily dressing.
Group Clothes by Type – Keep similar items together (shirts, dresses, trousers, etc.).
Use Matching Hangers – This instantly makes your wardrobe look neater.
Arrange by Colour or Season – So you can quickly find what you need.
Use Storage Boxes for Accessories – Keep scarves, belts, and bags neatly stored.
