Styling Mistakes Holding Your Space Back? Here Are 6 Fast Fixes
Ever strolled into your living room, fluff a cushion here or nudge a vase there, and still thought, “Why doesn’t this feel right?” I’ve been there: juggling mismatched rugs, lonely décor pieces, or one-dimensional lighting, wondering where that magazine-worthy polish went. The great news is you don’t need a hefty budget or a full renovation to transform your space.
In this post, I’m sharing the six styling mistakes I spot most often and the simple, fast tweaks you can make today to create a home that feels both intentional and inviting.
1. Floating Furnishings
What I see: Couches shoved up against the walls, coffee tables floating in the middle of the room, looking lost.
My Fix: I nearly always anchor lounge seating with a rug and make sure couches aren’t flush against the wall. Creating a small gap (even just a few centimetres) gives pieces breathing room, and creates a small shadow, immediately making the layout look intentional.
2. All-Neutral, No Personality
What I see: A room awash in beiges or greys that ends up feeling… well, flat.
My Fix: Add one fun accent in a pop of colour or a bold pattern. Swap in a patterned cushion, a bright vase or a graphic rug to inject instant character—without overhauling your whole scheme. It’s a small move that makes a big impact.Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
3. Under-Scaled Rugs
What I see: Rugs that feel almost like doormats under grand sofas and armchairs.
My Fix: My golden rule is to get a rug that at least holds the front legs of each major piece. Suddenly, your sofa, chairs, and coffee table look like they belong together—unified and thoughtfully arranged.Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
4. Lone Statement Pieces
What I see: One bold lamp or a stunning artwork sitting by itself, begging for friends.
My Fix: I create a “power trio” around any standalone item. A sculptural vase? I’ll pair it with a stack of coffee-table books and a small potted plant. Three elements feel balanced and curated, never lonely.
5. Flat Lighting
What I see: One central ceiling light leaves the room shadowy and uninspiring.
My Fix: I layer lighting—mix table lamps, a floor lamp, and, if possible, a dimmable overhead. Even a single lamp in a corner makes textures pop and gives your room warmth and dimension.
6. Relying on One Surface Type
What I see: SRooms lined with only smooth finishes—think glass coffee tables, lacquered cabinets and sleek metal lamps—can look pristine but lack soul. Without varied surfaces, everything blurs together and your space feels flat.
My Fix: Choose at least three contrasting materials. For example, pair a velvet cushion with a chunky wool throw and a natural-fibre rug. Add a live-edge wood side table or a woven basket. Those differences in feel and finish bring warmth, depth and a sense of discovery.
